Save Your Seals This Winter!
The seals on the bottom of your garage door play a very important role in maintaining a warm garage and keeping unwanted pests like mice from entering your garage. However, a winter ice or snowstorm could put your seals at risk.
Melted ice and snow can freeze up at the entrance of your garage door, causing the seal to become frozen to the cement flooring of your garage. If you try to open the garage when your seals are frozen to the garage floor, it could cause the seal to tear. |
A garage door frozen down also causes your door opener to work harder than it normally would to raise the overhead door. Added wear and tear causes the gears in your garage opener to wear out prematurely. Both issues could result in an early appointment with your garage door professional.
Adam Hackamack with Overhead Door Company of Quincy suggests you protect your seals before a winter storm ever rolls in.
“Add a coat of Vaseline or WD-40 oil to the bottom of your seal before a snow, said Hakckamack. “This layer of product will keep your seals from freezing to the bottom of your concrete in the entrance of your garage.”
If your seals are already frozen to the garage concrete, Hackamack suggests using a hairdryer to release the seal from the ice. He also suggests heating your garage slightly during the winter in order to keep the seals from freezing to the floor.
Many issues with your garage door or garage door openers can happen during the winter months. If you are looking for help with your specific situation contact Overhead Door of Quincy at 217-222-0634.
